Course Work for Fashion Design

For this lab I got to take pieces of sample fabrics and burn them to determine what fabric types they are. It was super fun and interesting, I never knew that identification of fabric can happen by burning them. I learned a lot about the different categories that determine their identification, whether is is how the flame reacts or the fabric itself, the odor, or the ash at the end.

The report was also super fun for this one because when I first told my boyfriend what I was doing, he laughed in my face. Then , I got to explain how it works and why it is important and he became much more interested in it. He also asked very good questions.

This assignment was actually my favorite up to this point. I am a very visual learner so being able to make a physical version of the weaves made it so much easier to understand. I also like how it is something I can keep and refer back to whenever I need.

For this assignment I got to apply what I had learned to my own closet. I had to find different pieces of clothing to represent the weaves I was learning about. It is interesting to see how many different eave types I could find in my closet without even recognizing that I had such a variety.

For this assignment I got to paint a color wheel replica. This one was fun because I got to paint, and if you know me, you know I love painting. I think this activity is another helpful one in that it is very visual as you see the color changes right before your eyes. You can experiment with how much of each color you need, especially when doing the tints and shades.

For this assignment I had the opportunity to research a job in the fashion field and I chose a creative director position. I was able to see what their typical tasks would be as well as the salary and required skills. I also found an association and publication created for creative directors.

For this assignment I was asked to design a line of clothing that was inspired by a theme of my choice, had five designs total, and each one had to follow a certain category. The categories were color scheme, structural lines, asymmetrical balance, focal point, and rhythm. With my designs, I had to talk about design details, uniqueness, and fabric types. This assignment was so much fun and I loved being able to apply the knowledge I have gained into something both creative and fun.

For this assignment I had to come up with a merchandising plan for a store that would be selling my line that I designed the week prior. I had to study different store layouts, pricing strategies, target customers, and assortment plans. I also was required to draw a mock up store to bring the vision to life. This assignment was very helpful to show me how many factors go into a fashion line besides just designing. There are lots of business strategy that help a line to ultimately succeed.
